Since many year the city of Sfax and its coastal area are disconnected due to the former industrial area. Today, the city has a unique opportunity to repair the natural link with the sea: the industrial activities are being relocated, the decontamination works on the Taparura site have been finalised, a new organisation for the port is envisaged and an efficient network of public transport will be implemented. In addition, the transformation of the station area offers potential interaction between the city centre, the Médina and the European district.
The inhabitants have high expectations of the Taparura project. If all different projects are realized in a coordinated manner, Sfax will reconnect with its coastline and enjoy a revival of tourism. With a strong project management various obstacles can be overcome, turning the initial constraints (the port, the station, roads, canals and deprived neighbourhoods) into a unique opportunity.
Our team has concentrated efforts on the definition of a vision for integrated urban development, with high ambitions for the future of the Taparura site and its role within the city:
– Enhance the offer of services and infrastructure in the city: an efficient and sustainable mobility network, a quality green structure, a critical mass for a dynamic cultural life, meeting places and recreational areas, a wide variety of urban services (schools, health centres, business centres) and cultural and coastal attractions,…
– Create an innovative, sustainable and attractive eco-neighbourhood that offers living environments close to nature, a car-free transportation network, the promotion of sports and recreation in the district, a social and intergenerational society, the improvement at city scale of supply of green energy and sustainable water management.
