In 2019 BUUR was invited by the World Bank to be part of a team of experts to reflect about the potential of a specific social housing area to redefine the traditional public housing model. The Federal Capital Area (FCA) benefits from a unique location: central in the city structure and in the future public transportation network. It also faces systemic challenges such as deteriorating urban and natural environments and informal settlements.
The objective of the exercise is to showcase how such a strategic site can be leveraged to address the housing need in a sustainable way; to redevelop low-density housing area into a high density mixed-use and mixed-income neighborhood; to include informal settlements and support local economic development; and to mobilize private and public partnerships for implementation. The ambition is to ultimately trigger similar interventions in other strategic sites in the city in order to gradually transform the overall urban structure of the city into a polycentric model.
